NHS Flu Jab. How does it work?

With the co-circulation of Coronavirus, flu vaccination is more important than ever to help you stay well over the winter months. Flu is a highly infectious viral infection. It comes on very quickly and can cause many symptoms including fever, aching body, exhaustion, sore throat and headache. Getting a flu jab is the single most effective step you can take to protect yourself, and others, from flu this winter.

NHS England funds this service and aims to vaccinate as many people as possible each year.

For those over 65, people with a medical condition or pregnant women, catching flu can be more serious and that’s why they are offered a FREE NHS funded flu vaccine.

This year the flu vaccine is being offered on the NHS to:

  • adults aged 65 and over
  • people with certain medical conditions**Asthma or COPD, Kidney disease, Neurological disease, Diabetes, Asplenia or splenic dysfunction, Heart disease, Liver disease, Morbid obesity, weakened immune system due to disease or treatment.)

Chickenpox:

Two doses of the chickenpox vaccine are more than 90% effective at preventing the disease. Some people who are vaccinated can still get chickenpox. However, the symptoms are usually milder with fewer or no blisters (they may have just red spots) and low or no fever.

MMR:

The MMR vaccine is very effective. After 2 doses around 99% of people will be protected against measles and rubella plus around 88% of people will be protected against mumps.

People who are vaccinated against mumps, but still catch it, are less likely to have serious complications or be admitted to hospital.

Protection against measles, mumps and rubella starts to develop around 2 weeks after having the MMR vaccine.

Book a private Pneumonia Vaccination

Now that you have had your NHS flu vaccination, you can save time and receive a private pneumonia vaccination too. Nearly 270,000 hospital admissions each year in England are due to pneumonia, and around 1 in 4 cases occur in adults under 65.*

Pneumonia is an infection that can cause serious illness and even death. It affects around one in 100 adults in the UK each year** and is most common in autumn and winter.

Am I at risk?

Pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death due to infection in men and women. It can increase the risk of having a heart attack, as well as worsening existing heart failure. Pneumonia can affect anyone, but some people are more at risk of catching it.

Risk factors include:

• Increasing age – the risk is greater in older adults

• Smoking – not only is the risk of catching pneumonia greater, but it can be more serious in people who smoke

• Other health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease or respiratory diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

• A weakened immune system

Reduce absenteeism and enhance productivity.

We can provide flu vaccinations to your staff onsite at your location or at Prestwich Pharmacy.

Businesses include:

  • Care Homes
  • Offices
  • Nurseries & Schools
  • Colleges & Universities

Carers and Care Home staff are eligible for this service free of charge.

Why get the flu vaccine?

Make an appointment

Reduce your risk of getting the flu. In the UK, the flu vaccine is estimated to be about 59% effective in preventing flu illness in adults aged 18 to 65 years.

Reduce your risk of serious complications. If you do get the flu, the flu vaccine can help protect you from serious complications, such as pneumonia, hospitalization, and death. The flu vaccine is especially important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from the flu, including older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and pregnant women.

Protect others and reduce the spread of the flu. Even if you don't get sick, you can still spread the virus to others. The flu vaccine can help protect your loved ones, especially those who are at high risk of serious complications. When more people get vaccinated, it helps to reduce the spread of the flu virus in the community.

The best time to get a flu vaccination is in the autumn or early winter before flu starts spreading.

The flu vaccine is safe and effective. The most common side effects of the flu vaccine are mild and go away on their own within a few days.
